The truth of the old adage 'the best gifts come in small packages' is perfectly exemplified in this neat little book on "Safe Cholecystectomy A-Z" by Prof. V. K. Kapoor. With his novel way of covering every conceivable aspect of laparoscopic cholecystectomy under the alphabetic headings A-Z, each alphabet having multiple entries, the reader is taken along a laparoscopic roller-coaster with an incredibly exciting, even bizarre, juxtaposition of varied, unrelated topics with one central theme, safety of the most common laparoscopic procedure - cholecystectomy.

Each entry has its own punch, its special impact. This little book is of equal benefit to the young resident who can through its small pithy sentences acquire full encyclopedic knowledge on this subject, as it is to the senior surgeon who finds reiteration of all his own experiences and thoughts.
"Safe Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy A-Z" goes way beyond mere information - it embodies the surgical philosophy and thinking of a lifetime of a surgeon who for decades has applied his hand, head and heart to the practice of surgery - not the surgery of high technology or automation, but the surgery of a one-to-one relationship with the patient.

This book is a throwback to the sadly disappearing art of Halstedian tutorship where teaching was not at Conferences or via Journals but by gentle asides and "in passing" words of wisdom devoid of pretence or pomposity. Grey Turner surely would feel proud to find mention in Dr. Kapoor's masterpiece just as Halstead would have enjoyed reading it.

I would consider this little book as one of the gems of Indian Surgical Literature.
